Japan likely to pass casino bill in Oct., locals to pay entry

Japan is likely to approve a bill legalizing casinos in October, with resorts likely to be based in major cities and locals charged a fee for entry, Bloomberg cited a lawmaker backing the bill as saying.

Koichi Hagiuda, secretary-general of a lawmaker’s group promoting the casino bill and an aide to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, told the news agency in an interview that Japanese visitors should be charged an entry fee of about 5,000 yen ($46), while customers from overseas could enter free. The delays in passing the bill, coupled with labor shortages, have cast doubt over whether Japan will have its first casino open in time for the 2020 Olympics.
