Japan to charge Singapore-style casino entrance fees

Japan is considering adopting a Singaporean-style model, charging its own citizens to enter casinos, while foreigners can enter for free, according to Japan’s Nikkei.

The country is expected to build three integrated resorts in time for the 2020 Olympics.

The fee however is likely to be less than the S$100 ($80) Singapore charges, the report said.

Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has said he will seek to push through a bill laying the framework for legal casinos in the country in a Fall session of parliament. Lawmakers began discussing the legislation in the Diet session that ended in June, but did not have enough time to proceed to a vote.

Japan’s casino market has the potential for annual revenue of as much as $40 billion, according to a report earlier this year by CLSA. The world’s biggest casino operators are jockeying for position, with both Las Vegas Sands and MGM Resorts saying they may be prepared to spend as much as $10 billion on projects in the country.
