Junior Chamber International urges Fukuoka city to join IR race

Junior Chamber International Fukuoka is making a strong push for Fukuoka city, the most populous municipality on the island of Kyushu, to join the IR race, and they will soon be formally petitioning the local government and business leaders to join this campaign.

Taichi Tojima, chairman of the Junior Chamber International Fukuoka Future City Design Committee commented, “When thinking about the future of Fukuoka, there is an unavoidable reality that, as in Japan's overall trend, there is an inevitable decline in economic vitality and fiscal weakness due to depopulation and aging. Therefore, we recently decided to propose that the city of Fukuoka become more vibrant and more livable by means of an IR, which is now a topic of discussion throughout the country.”

The Junior Chamber has offered four possible locations around the city where the IR might be sited.

The campaign was launched on the evening of October 30 at a symposium that gathered about three hundred people. The proponents emphasize that Fukuoka city is the main gateway to Kyushu both in terms of railway access as well as air traffic, making access to the IR relatively simple.

On the other hand, an IR bid by Fukuoka would certainly be disruptive to the IR campaign of Sasebo, Nagasaki, which has been working for several years to win local and regional support

A Fukuoka city bid might also head off a potential bid by Kitakyushu city, which is within Fukuoka Prefecture.

The Junior Chamber has also released the following video to promote their IR initiative.
