Kerala government orders probe against single digit lotteries

The Kerala government has ordered a probe into single-digit lotteries after complaints of lottery fraud, local media reports.

In response to a notice seeking adjournment motion on single digit illegal lotteries trade in the state, Finance Minister T M Thomas Issac said that government took the matter very seriously and stern action would be taken on the basis of the report of the Special Task Force.

The state would telecast live the draw of Kerala State Lotteries everyday to combat the illegal lottery, he said.

Single digit lottery is an illegal form of gambling. If the "predictions" of a player matched with the last three numbers of the winning ticket, whose lottery was conducted in the state, they will win the prize.

“The single-digit lottery, locally known as ‘written lottery’, is actually illegal betting. It is suspected that an organised group is behind the lottery which operates more in the Northern parts of the state,” he said. People become addicted to this kind of betting quickly, he said.
