Kuwana mayor supports IR bid investigation

Kuwana Mayor Narutaka Ito indicated at a press conference on the 13th that he supports an investigation by the Mie Prefectural Government of an IR bid, and his comments suggested that he views an IR as a potential benefit to his community.

“It would be great to secure resources for administrative services,” the mayor stated, “but we must look very carefully on the impact on the healthy development of our young people.”

Mayor Ito also pointed out the visitors to Marina Bay Sands in Singapore probably have little awareness of its casino as the overwhelming majority of the facility was dedicated to various non-gaming tourist services and entertainment.

On the other hand, Mayor Ito believes that the local community likely doesn’t understand that fact and a strong perception gap about IRs remains in Japan.

Also, the mayor is not sure if his small city can host all of the facilities required under the national government’s IR Implementation Act.

Last week, the Mie Prefectural Chamber of Commerce and Industry formally requested Mie Governor Eikei Suzuki to conduct research with an eye toward making an IR bid.
