Launch of Taipa to Cotai rail services

The much-delayed Taipa to Cotai section of the Macao Light Rapid Transit (Macao LRT) opens Tuesday, with inauguration ceremonies to be led by Chief Executive Chui Sai On.

After sixteen years of planning and construction, the MOP11 billion (about US$1.3 billion), 9.3 kilometer LRT will initially operate between eleven stations: Taipei Ferry Terminal, Airport, MUST, Cotai East, East Asia Games, Lotus checkpoint, Cotai West, Pai Kok, Stadium, Jockey Club, and Ocean. This section of the Macao LRT is expected to be extended to the Macau Peninsula in future years.

Transport on the LRT will be free until the end of the year, and the regular fares beginning in January are expected to be revealed soon.

The establishment of Macao LRT is one of the main transportation infrastructure projects that the Macau government has undertaken since it began collecting massive tax revenues from the gaming industry.
