Licensing to be made compulsory

Persons operating a casino without a valid license will be subject to up to five years' imprisonment and fines of $45,000 under regulations now being drafted, unnamed Finance Ministry officials told Sri Lanka's Sunday Times. Several of Colombo's nine casinos are unlicensed as operators have lacked incentives to register. The newspaper reported that six casinos and 1,094 betting centers have been paying taxes.
