Locals banned from casinos in Sikkim, entry fee hiked

The Sikkim government has banned locals from entering casinos and playing in live casinos, Glaws reports, quoting the official gazette.

As per the notification, “only persons having the photo identity card, either voter identity card or Aadhar card or Passport issued from outside the State of Sikkim will be permitted for entry into the casinos.”

The entry fee for casinos has also been doubled, from Rs. 500 (US$7.4) to Rs. 1000

The new amendment is said to impact the two casinos currently operational in the state - Hotel Royal Plaza and Mayfair Resort, where a large part of its revenue comes from locals.

It is noted that the new amendment does not apply to online betting and gaming outlets operating in the state, where locals will be continued entry.
