Looming strike could cripple Las Vegas casinos

Thousands of hotel and casino workers in Las Vegas are set to walk off the job next month, with calls from unionized workers for wage increases, job security and strengthened protections against sexual harassment.

At the end of May, the contracts for around 50,000 unionized workers will expire, while new contracts with the aforementioned inclusions are still in negotiations.

On Tuesday, around 25,000 Culinary Union members took part in a vote authorizing a strike, with 99 percent voting in favor should their demands not be met.

The strike could happen anytime after June 1, and would likely cripple casino and hotel operations across Las Vegas.

Workers set to strike will include everyone from bartenders, room attendants to servers, cooks and kitchen workers.

The last strike in Las Vegas happened in 1984, spanning 67 days, costing the city tens of millions of dollars.

The latest strike will likely affect properties including Caesars Palace, Planet Hollywood, Bellagio, MGM Grand, Stratosphere, The D and El Cortez, according to reports.
