Lottery sales in Kerala soar over Rs. 5,696 crores

Lottery sales in Kerala have soared to over Rs. 5,696 crores (US$832 million), with a target of Rs. 6,250 crores by the end of the current fiscal year, local media reports.

Proceeds from the lottery tickets have risen from Rs.557 crore to Rs.5,696 crore during the five-year tenure of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who said the government "intends to take this figure to Rs.10,000 crore."

Kerala’s chief minister also said he plans for the proceeds to provide a living to thousands of lottery ticket sellers, as well as to provide money to the Karunya Fund, which provides money for the medical treatment of poor patients.

"So far, we have paid out Rs.1,200 crore through this fund as cost of health and medical care to the poor and weaker sections of the society," said Chandy.

Currently, there are close to 40,000 authorized agents and over 100,000 retail sellers of lottery tickets.
