Macau arrests five police officers over corruption

Five Macau police officers and one retired officer have been arrested over suspected corruption and cooperation with illegal gangs, marking the first crackdown involving its own law enforcement personnel, local media reports.

Six individuals in total, including a retired police officer, were arrested for taking bribes and making illicit profits of MOP1.8 million (US$222,000), in a racket that gave gamblers from mainland China illegal entry to the city.

"Secretary for Security Wong Sio Chak said he felt very sad, and highly concerned about the incident," the government said in a statement published on Friday.

An in depth investigation will be undertaken, as well as strengthened management throughout the force, the statement added.

The arrests follow Xi Jinping’s renewed vows towards anti-corruption and an intensified crackdown on corruption in China.

The crackdown has pressured VIP revenues in Macau over the past year, with gambling revenues tumbling 35 percent in 2015.
