Macau awards Ho medal of merit for tourism

The Macau government has awarded Lawrence Ho the Medal of Merit - Tourism for his contribution to tourism in the territory.

The recommendation came from a Macau government committee, which decided Ho was one of the 42 individuals and organizations that have contributed the most to the region’s economy and tourism sector with his “achievements, outstanding contributions and distinguished services.”

Ho is chairman of Melco International Development and its Melco Resorts & Entertainment unit. He is also the son of casino magnate Stanley Ho, who held the monopoly license for gambling in Macau for four decades.

Melco Resorts operates the City of Dreams in Macau and Manila and in 2015 opened the Hollywood-themed Studio City IR on Cotai. It also owns a series of Mocha clubs throughout Macau.

Studio City was the first IR to open with no VIP gaming, falling into line with a government push to develop the mass market and more non-gaming attractions. It has since added VIP rooms.
