Macau lawmaker says no need for more casinos

Lawmaker Pereira Coutinho voiced his disapproval of allowing more casinos to open following this week’s launch of Studio City and as the economy looks to diversify, local media reported.

TDM Macau cited Coutinho as sharing opposing views to Macau’s Chief Executive on the direction the economy should follow and how lenient the government should be on new gaming operations.

"It's very simple: we don't want to have so many casinos in Macau. We have too many of them. They shouldn't be allowed to have so many gaming tables," said Coutinho.

"The Chief Executive and I do not share this idea that Macau is going through an austerity period. There's a change in the way the gaming industry is developing in Macau and that has not compromised, for now, social welfare measures including wage updates and the reform of the administration," said Coutinho.
