Macau returns to normal after mass testing finished with no new cases found

Macau is returning to normal after the city’s second consecutive mass testing found no new COVID cases in the community. In total, some 660,000 samples were collected during the two-day testing period, with authorities noting the results indicate that the ‘current round of the epidemic has been effectively controlled’.

In total 10 cases of infection had been detected, linked to two imported cases from the neighbouring mainland Chinese city of Zhuhai. The cases caused a three-day shutdown of MGM Cotai, with nearly 1,600 people, including staff and clients, shuttered inside and undergoing daily testing. The facility has since reopened after being ‘fully sanitized and disinfected’, the company told AGB.
The successful termination of the mass testing bodes well for the recently opened e-visa and tour group scheme by mainland Chinese authorities, expected to cause a rise in visitation to the SAR.
