Macau sees strong start in January, Bernstein says

Macau’s gaming ADR for the first ten days (Jan. 1-10) was 21 percent higher than December, a sign of Macau’s stabilization, says Bernstein.

The MOP 700-730 million (US$87.5 - $91.2 million) figures for the start of January are elevated due to the January holiday (Jan. 1-3), and driven by both VIP and premium mass performance. Bernstein estimates January GGR to be MOP 18.3- 9.5 billion, representing a year on year decline of 18-23 percent.

On the subject of the recent junket theft at SJM’s L’Arc Casino VIP room, Bernstein believes the case will accelerate the government’s plan to introduce greater junket regulation.

“The most recent junket fraud case may accelerate the government's plans to potentially introduce greater junket regulation. Such new regulations would create headwinds in junket VIP and may further limit junkets' ability to raise capital and conduct operations in the manner to which they are accustomed.”
