Macau Sept. tourist arrivals gain, overnight guests decline

Tourism arrivals showed strong growth into Macau in September, though government data shows the biggest gains were in the lower spending day tripper category.

The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) said visitors gained by 8 percent year-on-year to 2,764,924. Same-day visitors surged by 20.4 percent to 1,388,301, while overnight visitors declined by 2.3 percent to 1,376,623.

As  the proportion of same-day visitors expanded by 5.2 percentage points year-on-year to 50.2 percent, the average length of stay of visitors shortened by 0.1 day to 1.3 days.

The Hong Kong, Zhuhai, Macau bridge and improved infrastructure in the Greater Bay area is helping to drive visitor numbers to Macau, although this is not having a major impact on gross gambling revenue, which was up just 0.6 percent in the month.

Visitors from mainland China went up by 5.7 percent year-on-year to 1,924,490, with just under half from Guangdong Province.

By mode of transport, arrivals by land were up 32.5 percent, with 287,362 arriving across the bridge and 1.54 million through the border gate.

In the first three quarters of 2019, visitor arrivals reached 30,202,906, up 17 percent, with same day visitors jumping 30.6 percent and overnight visitors by 4.9 percent. The average length of stay of visitors reduced by 0.1 day year-on-year to 1.2 days.
