Macau should diversify tourism offerings; Beijing

A Beijing government official recently commented that Macau should diversify its tourism offerings in order to attract higher quality visitors, including more business and family travelers, local media reports.

Yao Jian, deputy director of the Central People’s Government Liaison Office in Macau made the comments during the 9th Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum and Exhibition.

“We hope that on the basis of maintaining the number of visitor arrivals at the level of around 30 million, the structure of these visitors can be changed so that there will be more visitors coming here under the Individual Visit Scheme, more convention and exhibition visitors and more coming here for a vacation with their families,” said Yao.

Yao added that even if visitor numbers do not grow, the quality of visitors and the scale of their spending would be good for Macau, and added this would be achieved through diversifying Macau’s tourist offerings.

In January, the Macau Government Tourist Office director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes said the government intends to attract around 30 million visitors to Macau this year, and persuade more to stay overnight. Fernandes said last year, the total visitor arrivals to Macau hit 30.7, million, a slight drop of 2.6 percent compared with 2014.
