Macau to attract a record 40 million tourists in 2019

Macau visitor arrivals are expected to hit a record 40 million in 2019, driven by traffic over the Hong Kong, Zhuhai, Macau bridge.

Macau Government Tourism Office Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes told local media at the weekend that the figure would mark a 438 percent increase since the founding of the Macau Special Administrative Region in 1999.

She said visitor arrivals during the seven-day National Day Golden Week holiday period increased 11 percent compared to the same period last year. While the number of mainland visitors rose nine percent year-on-year between October 1 and 7, visitors from Hong Kong saw the highest year-on-year increase during the period – more than 40 percent.

Macau recorded 27.4 million visitor arrivals in the first eight months of the year, up 18 percent year-on-year.

The higher tourism figures aren’t however translating into significantly higher gross gambling revenue for Macau, given much of the traffic is in the lower grind, mass sector.
