Macau unveils its Urban Master Plan

The government of Macau has unveiled some of the details of its Urban Master Plan, meant to guide the development of the SAR through the year 2040.

The Urban Master Plan envisions that by the end of that period the local population will have reached 808,000 (up from about 696,000 presently) and the territory will have a total land area of 36.8 square kilometers.

The plan creates eighteen defined zones for residential, tourism, green leisure, industrial, and diversified industries purposes.

The tourism and entertainment zones have been designated a 13 percent share of land use divided between the Cotai and NAPE/ZAPE areas, and it is envisioned that most future casinos, but with a few exceptions, will be located there.

It also includes some non-gaming tourism development zones and areas for parks and greenery.

The plan was developed in partnership with Ove Arup & Partners Hong Kong Limited, and is the product of about six years of deliberation.
