Macau VIP volume improves in August: Bernstein

Macau’s VIP volume may have improved in the month up until Aug. 18th, according to Bernstein Research’s channel checks.

It said gross gaming revenue for the period was about MOP14.8 billion ($1.83 billion), with an average daily rate of MOP822 million. The ADR is up 4 percent from July and down 4 percent from August last year.

GGR came back strong last week just before summer holidays are about to wrap up,” it wrote.

It estimates VIP volume was up mid to high single digits, though hold was lighter than normal. Mass market revenue was up in the mid single digits. For the month as a whole, the firm sees GGR declining between two and four percent.

Bernstein notes that GGR earlier this month was affected by Typhoon Lekima, which hit coastal cities in China. The ongoing protests in Hong Kong are also having some impact on visitation, while negativity over the geopolitical and macro-economic situation is also likely to take its toll.
