Macau visitor spending balloons to $2.1 billion in 2Q23

Total spending by visitors to Macau - excluding gaming expenses - ballooned 354.6 percent year-on-year to MOP17.48 billion ($2.1 billion) in the second quarter of this year, while per-capita spending rose by 7.8 per cent to MOP2,610 ($323), statistics published by the SAR authorities show.

Visitor arrivals reached more than 6.69 million in the second quarter of 2023, representing a year-on-year uplift of 321.7 percent, as pandemic restrictions were lifted and visitation surged. With the usually busy official mainland holidays and summer season, the average length of stay of visitors also rose by 0.2 day to 1.2 days.
By the end of the second quarter, the average occupancy rate of guest rooms in Macau had increased by 46.2 percentage points year-on-year to 80.7 percent, with more than 3.33 million guests reported.
As of June, some 131 hotel establishments were registered in Macau, providing a total of 42,971 guest rooms. Macau is set to undergo an expansion of its hotel room capacity with the construction of nine hotels, potentially adding up to 3,732 additional hotel rooms, already in the pipeline.
Just this week Galaxy Entertainment Group announced the soft opening of its new 450-suite Raffles Hotel, a partnership with Accor and Raffles Hotels & Resorts.
