Maharashtra bans online lotteries from other states

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and state Finance Minister Ajit Pawar have decided to ban online lotteries from other states, in order to support the growth of its paper lottery.

While Maharashtra banned its own online lottery many years ago, its citizens had preferred to purchase other state lotteries online.

However, Pawar said he was concerned that as the state had no record of their sales, this has led to revenue loss to the government.

“The government has no control over this and there is no way to keep track of the transactions. For this lack of transparency, we have decided to ban the online system,” said an official from the state department.

Maharashtra’s lottery revenues stand at around Rs 132 crore (US$18.6 million) per year.
