Malaysia blocks 301 illegal gambling sites in 6 months

Malaysia has blocked access to 301 illegal gambling websites during the first six months of the year.

Deputy Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Jailani Johari said it was part of the 940 applications to block access to online gambling submitted by the relevant authorities, The Malay Online reported.

“The ministry and the [Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission] will not keep quiet, but will act by censoring and blocking online gambling or any other inappropriate websites to combat the online gambling activity which had raised public concern,” The Malay Online quoted him as saying.

The minister’s comments were in response to a new tactic used by illegal gambling operators which is to use text messages to promote their business.

Jailani said the MCMC had also blocked access to 325 online gambling websites from 538 applications made by the police, the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry and the Malaysian Islamic Development Department.
