Malta removes VAT obligation for event betting

The Malta government has approved a measure that allows betting on events, such as sports, to be exempt from Value Added Tax (VAT), starting January 1, 2018, local media reports.  

According to an entry in the Government Gazette this week, the placing of bets and wagers, including the services of bookmakers, betting exchanges and equivalent facilities will be exempt without credit for VAT services.

This brings sports betting in line with lotto and lotteries, which is already exempt from VAT in Malta.

The government also clarified that casino table games, such as blackjack, roulette and poker, slots and other games of chance where the outcome is determined by a random generator will not be exempt from VAT.

Any gambling services using remote gaming equipment will also not be exempt.
