Mandovi River may see sixth casino

The Goa state government has opened up the possibility of a sixth offshore casino on the River Mandovi, local media reports.

In a statement made before the high court of Bombay at Goa, the state government said it would favorably consider the application for a casino license renewal for Golden Globe Hotels Private Limited (GGHPL).

GGHPL failed to pay the annual license fee, and its casino is not currently in operation.

S G Desai, senior counsel for GGHPL, stated that the petitioner agreed to pay the lapsed annual license fees amounting to around Rs 50 crore ($7.5 million).

Additional advocate general Dattaprasad Lawande stated, "In case the petitioners deposit the amount so demanded, the state government shall favourably consider the application for further renewal of the casino licence from the year 2016, as well as the substitution of the vessel on the basis of prevailing law, as well as in non-discriminating manner."
