MGS Entertainment Show kicked off Tuesday

The 2017 MGS Entertainment Show and Summit kicked off on Tuesday morning with its opening ceremony at The Venetian Macao.

MGS organizer Jay Chun, Chairman of the Macau Gaming Equipment Manufacturers Association (MGEMA), delivered the welcoming speech to the more than 300 guests in attendance, including top government officials, executives of the Macau gaming operators, major companies participating in this year’s event, and friends from the media.

Mr. Chun said, “We are extremely excited about the show this year. We have worked hard to make this a valuable and interesting event, both for our exhibitors and visitors. The theme of this year’s show is the Smart City, and we have many smart-city technologies displayed on the show floor – robotics, video surveillance,

cloud computing, and mobile software applications. It is our goal to help pave the way for entrepreneurs who are coming up with innovative ideas that will change entertainment and everyday life for all of us.”

In sharing some of the highlights of the 3-day MGS Entertainment Show, Mr. Chun stated, “We are hosting a three-day summit, which is also exploring the role of smart-city technology, as well as looking at Macau’s role in China’s Belt & Road Initiative. We have speakers representing tech giants, gaming industry regulators, integrated resort operators, industry analysts and more.”

The officiating guests were given a tour of the show floor after the opening ceremony, visiting the booths of some of the 162 companies and organizations exhibiting this year. From small local suppliers to international household names, and from educational institutions to industry publications, a wide range of exhibitors catering to the broad-based entertainment industry are showcasing their wares at this year’s event.

The Smart City, Smart Economy theme of the show has brought together a wide swath of companies at the leading edge of technology. Major players in cloud computing, video surveillance, mobile and social media applications, and robotics are shining a light on the state of the fast-changing industry. Alibaba, Amazon, Hikvision, Sina, and Qihan are a few of the big names promoting their visions for how the smart city of the near future will transform industry and everyday life.

Getting the ball rolling on an engaging day of summit discussions, Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) director Paulo Chan discussed the importance of regulation and supervision to Macau’s economy. Mr. Chan’s talk was followed by a three-person panel that explored China’s Belt and Road Initiative and its importance to Macau, as well as new attractions the city can explore, such as e-sports.

Sitting on the panel were Pansy Ho, executive chairman and managing director of Shun Tak Holdings Limited and vice chairman and Secretary General of World Tourism Economic Forum, Wilfred Wong, president of Sands China Ltd., and Tong Ka Iok, principle partner of Baker Tilly Hong Kong.

Closing off the morning, Wang De Pei, vice president of the China Society of Economic Reform, gave a talk on urbanization in China.

Later, representatives from tech giants Alibaba Cloud, Amazon Web Services and Hikvision shared their insights on the technology that has transformed cities throughout China into so-called “smart cities”, leaving the audience with a clearer picture of how cloud computing and advanced surveillance technology are poised to revolutionize city life in the coming years.

Wrapping up the day, Mr. Chun, together with Suncity Group CEO and Director Alvin Chau and Meg-Star International CEO and director Thomas Pang, discussed VIP services in the gaming sector and the many ways in which new technology is affecting the junket business.

The next two days of the summit will focus on e-sports, new gaming technology and new gaming markets, with talks and roundtable discussions featuring game developers, regulators, consultants, academics, and analysts.

The MGS Entertainment Show and Summit run through 16 November. The show floor is open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
