Mumbai track's fate spurs fight at meeting

Three women members of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corp., the greater Mumbai city council, came to blows over the issue of the conversion of Mahalaxmi Racecourse into a public garden. Sheetal Mhatre of the Congress party sought a discussion of the conversion plans of Shiv Sena, the city's ruling party, but was allegedly physically attacked by two female city council members, for making gestures and throwing bangles at Mayor Sunil Prabhu when he rejected her requests. The Royal Western India Turf Club Ltd.'s 99-year lease for the track site expired May 31; ownership of the site is split between the city and the Congress-run state government.
