Myanmar gambling bill passes lower house

Myanmar's Gambling Bill, which will allow foreigner-only casinos to operate in the country, has been passed by the lower house of Parliament, according to a report from Eleven Myanmar.

The bill, which includes amendments to the 1986 Gambling Act, will allow the set up of foreigner-only casinos in the country. However, casinos will be prohibited from opening in culturally significant hotspots, such as Bagan.

Last month, U Kyaw Soe Lin, secretary of the Bill Committee said that casinos will likely be opened near the Myanmar border to attract more foreigners from neighboring countries such as Thailand and China.

“Only foreigners will be allowed into the casinos. As such, the government will target areas with the most foreigners, such as near the border,” said U Aung Hlaing Win.
