Nagasaki pushes forward on IR bid policy

Despite the delay in central government policy and criticism from some citizen’s groups, Nagasaki Prefecture is pushing ahead with its IR plans, launching the first meeting of an Experts Committee on Wednesday evening.

There are nine experts on the new committee, who held their meeting at the Nagasaki Prefectural Headquarters building. Media cameras were allowed to film the opening the meeting, but otherwise it was closed to the public.

These local experts are expected to hold two or three more meetings during the course of the fiscal year. The approach they are taking is to move forward with creating the prefecture’s own IR policy and then later revise those plans as necessary once the central government finally issues its basic policies.

Meanwhile, the “Stop Casino! Prefectural Citizens Network,” formed in March, has begun street protests in Nagasaki city, handing out leaflets and gathering signatures opposing the IR bid in the prefecture.
