Nagasaki upgrades maritime transport infrastructure to boost IR bid

Nagasaki Prefecture is moving to upgrade its maritime transportation to and from Nagasaki Airport as part of its effort to boost its IR bid.

Nagasaki Airport lay on an island in Omura Bay, and is connected by a high-speed boat service, which runs five times per day, directly to the Huis Ten Bosch theme park, situated on the northern coast of Omura Bay.

However, the existing pier was built in 1971 and has suffered typhoon damage. A JPY5.3 billion (US$49 million) budget is being prepared to construct new breakwaters and a modern floating pier.

Transportation and access has been regarded as one of the main weak points in Nagasaki’s IR bid, and this plan could help to alleviate the concerns.
