New Zealand gambling spend rises 0.3 percent in 2013


New Zealand gamblers spent a record $2.1 billion dollars (US$1.8 billion) in the 2012/2013 fiscal year, a 0.3 percent gain from the prior period, according to the country’s Department of Internal Affairs. Lottery spending saw the biggest increase, jumping from $419 million to $432 million, followed by the New Zealand racing board, where spending rose from $283 million to $294 million and casinos where spending was up from $509 million to $520 million. Spending on gaming machines fell from $854 million to $826 million. However, on an inflation adjusted basis total gambling  spending has dropped almost 19 percent from a peak in 2004.
