Non-gaming spending down 4 percent in 16Q2

Visitor spending on non-gaming fell 4.5 percent year-on-year in the second quarter, according to the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC).

Visitors’ total non-gaming spending in 16Q2 amounted to 11.7 billion patacas, down by 4.5 per cent year-on-year but up by 1.4 per cent quarter-on-quarter, said DSEC. Overnight visitors and same-day visitors dropped 3 percent and 10 percent respectively.

However, while mainland visitor non-gaming spending was down in the second quarter, non-gaming spending from visitors from Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Taiwan rose between 9.8 to 12.7 percent.

Shopping again took the largest share of non-gaming spending, followed by accommodation and food & drinks.

In May, the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) estimated non-gaming revenue could reach MOP 112 billion by 2025, in a newly presented tourism plan.

The ‘Macau Tourism Industry Development Plan’, presented by the MGTO, focuses on increasing tourist visitation, increasing the number of budget hotels, expanding the waterfront area and pushing up non-gaming revenue, as well as attracting more diversified visitors.
