Number of Macau gaming workers up 2.2 percent to 69,300 through May

The number of people employed in Gaming & Junket Activities in Macau rose to 69,300 the three months to 31 May 2023, up 1,500 from the 67,800 employees in the February to April period but down 1,900 compared to the same quarter in 2022.

According to information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), the March to May period saw Macau’s general unemployment rate stay unchanged at 2.8 percent while that of Macau residents’ unemployment rate also stood at 3.6 percent.
Macau has a 369,800 labor force who live in Macau. According to the preliminary estimates from the movement records, an average of about 88,300 Macau residents and non-resident workers worked in Macau but lived outside the territory during the reference period. When including these individuals, the total labor force was 458,100, a decrease of 1,400 from the previous period.
The number of unemployed was 10,500, similar to that in the previous period. Among the unemployed searching for a new job, most of them were previously engaged in the Construction sector and Gaming & Junket Activities.
Meanwhile, the proportion of new labor market entrants seeking their first job increased by 0.7 percentage points to 4.6 percent of the total unemployed.
