NZ government backs Australia problem gambling study

The New Zealand Health Ministry is financially backing research into the social impact of gambling in Australia, as part of policy measures to assess further development of gaming and entertainment in New Zealand.
The Ministry of Health has called on the Experimental Gambling Research Laboratory, based in Bundaberg Queensland, to assess the impact of gambling across the Tasman, backed by a NZ$286,000 ($223,000) grant.
CQ University researchers Dr Matthew Browne, Erika Langham and Associate Professor Matthew Rockloff will be working closely with researchers from Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand media reports said.
Browne said the study would be paying special attention how gambling can affect different sections of the community, such as Maoris, "who carry a disproportionate share of the burden of gambling harms."
He said previous research had attempted to quantify the amount of harm occurring in the community centered on purely economic measures. But in the current project measurements would be taken in terms of quality-adjusted life-years lost due to gambling.
The CQ University Laboratory will progress the NZ project alongside an ongoing $300,000 project funded by the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation.
