Online lotteries are legit: Maharashtra govt

The Maharashtra government has filed an affidavit in the Bombay High Court, saying that online lotteries have been conducted as per rules, tax is being paid, with no infirmities or illegalities, local media reports.

The affidavit comes after a PIL filed by Chandan Trivedi through counsel Shrirang Bhandarkar seeking an immediate ban on unauthorized online lotteries.

The PIL alleged that over 1,300 unauthorized online lotteries were operating in the state, and stated the government had permitted only 13 online lotteries.

So far these operators, who are able to circumvent tax payable to the state, have caused a loss of Rs 933 crore ($148.8 million) to state revenues, said the petitioner.
