Osaka’s IR Promotion Conference delayed by earthquake

The June 18 earthquake in Osaka disrupted business throughout the Kansai region, also forcing the cancellation of the 8th meeting of the IR Promotion Conference, which was to be held that very evening. An official of the Osaka prefectural government tells Asia Gaming Brief that a new date has not yet been selected, but it will likely be sometime in July.

The IR Promotion Conference was originally launched in March 2017 under the chairmanship of Hiroshi Mizohata, president of the Osaka Convention & Tourism Bureau. Professor Ichiro Tanioka, president of Osaka University of Commerce, was later listed as the deputy chairman.

Osaka’s IR Promotion Conference is a body that was created to advise the prefectural and city government on a wide range of issues related to the anticipated establishment of an IR at the Yumeshima site, including strategies to gain the understanding of the local public.

The IR Promotion Conference is budgeted to hold several meetings before the end of the fiscal year, but the unlucky June 18 meeting date was intended to the first meeting of FY2018. Among other things, the issue of tourism development had been on the agenda for the delayed meeting.
