PAGCOR donates PHP500m more for Covid-19 response

The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR) said it has allocated a further PHP500 million ($9.7 million) to government efforts to help combat the Covid-19 outbreak in the country.

This is in addition to the PHP2 billion fund that was remitted to the Socio-Civic Projects Fund on March 11.

PAGCOR Chairman and CEO Andrea D. Domingo said that similar to the PHP2 billion donation, the additional funding will be used for the procurement of personal protective equipment of healthcare frontliners, additional operating expenses of the Bureau of Quarantine, and support for the tests being conducted by the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine.

“The number of COVID-19 infected Filipinos is on the rise. But while these numbers are still small compared to other countries, the government is already doing its best to stop the spread of the virus. PAGCOR, being one of the government’s strong partners in nation-building will help ensure that through our funding support, the healthcare sector as well as other frontline government agencies will have access to basic medical necessities that are needed to combat the disease,” she said.

PAGCOR on Sunday announced it was suspending all gaming operations in the Metro Manila region, which has been put on lockdown by the Philippine President, Rodrigo Duterte. It said it will expand the order to other communities if they are similarly ordered to close down.

On Monday, Duterte announced further measures to stem the growing outbreak in the Philippines and said he would ask for China’s help should the situation deteriorate significantly.

Entry restrictions were placed on all countries with Covid-19 infections, apart from to Filipino nationals returning home.

Any community in the Philippines reporting more than two cases will be told to force quarantine, while the alert code has been raised to the highest possible level.

In 2019, the Philippines was the best-performing gaming market in Asia, posting PHP75.8 billion euros in revenue.
