Palau casino plans voted down

Plans to issue an exclusive gaming license for the South Pacific island of Palau have been voted down by the Senate.

The bill had already passed the House of Delegates. Lawmakers had pushed for the bill arguing that a casino would generate tens of millions of dollars in revenue, and reduce Palau's reliance on foreign donors. It would also help shore up the island’s pension system.

However, the plan has long faced opposition, with a referendum in 2011 overwhelmingly rejected the idea, with three-quarters of Palauans voting against it.
