Paulo Martins Chan expected to become new director of Macau gaming bureau

Paulo Martins Chan is expected to become the new director of the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, according to TDM Macau. 

The public prosecutor will replace Manuel Neves, retiring after 18 years as gaming regulator.

According to a source with direct knowledge of the decision, Chan was chosen due to his legal experience, at a time when the government will soon start renegotiating the gaming concessions.

The Secretary for Economy and Finance said he was still looking for a suitable candidate for the position.

However, Lionel Leong stressed the importance of appointing a legal expert with strong language skills.

“For the gaming industry, we have a need for (knowledge on) laws, especially on its enforcement and regulation.  Therefore, to understand the laws, we might need bilingual or trilingual talents.  So we are thinking about the factors required by the position when selecting the suitable candidate,” Leong was quoted by TDM as saying.
