PCI warns regional daily against publishing illegal lottery numbers

The Press Council of India (PCI), a government body which sets standards for journalists and has the power to reprimand erring publications, has warned a Marathi daily against publishing mysterious numbers which were alleged to be linked to illegal 'matka' gambling.

While the daily argued that the numbers were linked to legal lotteries organized by the Maharashtra state government, the stand was not accepted since they could not give any documents in support of the same. The daily later gave an undertaking to the PCI that it would not publish the mysterious numbers again.
