PIL filed to ban unauthorized online lotteries

A Nagpur social worker has reportedly filed a PIL to ban unauthorized online lotteries in his city of Maharashtra, local media reports.

Public Interest Litigation (PIL) is a tool used in India to connect the public with judiciary.

In the PIL, the social worker had contended that over 1,300 online lotteries promoted by other states within Maharashtra were operating in Nagpur, affecting the lives of millions.

According to The Times of India, a division bench comprising justice Bhushan Gavai and justice Swapna Joshi issued notices to central and state governments seeking their reply.

The PIL also states that the state government has allowed only 13 online lotteries, but operators from states such as Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Meghalaya, are also conducting online lotteries in his state.

The PIL also quotes state finance minister Sudhir Mungantiwar's statement in legislature, in which he promised to seek legal opinion to ban online lottery operators from other states, which do not pay tax in the state.
