Police lose jobs over illegal gambling

The Philippine National Police relieved 92 officials of their positions under a "one strike" policy aimed at making local commanders responsible for the persistence of illegal gambling in their jurisdictions. The police said they arrested 277 bet collectors, bettors and "financiers" in around 100 operations nationwide since February, though no operators were caught.

Those arrested named 24 police officers as allegedly involved as financiers, operators or bet collectors and those police, most in Manila, are to face questioning. The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group agents also seized 622,760 pesos ($15,135). Their main target is jueteng, the illegal numbers game.
