Policeman caned for gambling

 

Brig. Irwanuddin, a police officer in Aceh, received six lashings with a cane in front of hundreds of onlookers at the Sabang Great Mosque in Banda Aceh as punishment for gambling, becoming the first policeman to receive the penalty under the province's Shariah law provisions. A group of policemen had rescued him from his planned caning at the mosque last week, but Irwanuddin's commander sent him back for punishment. Two other people were convicted of gambling with Irwanuddin but have not yet been punished.
