Pro-IR Nagasaki governor re-elected

On a night in which the conservative Abe government and its allies swept to victory across the board in several major local elections, incumbent Nagasaki Governor Hodo Nakamura trounced his single Japan Communist Party challenger.

The plan to bid for a casino license at Sasebo city’s Huis Ten Bosch theme park was one of the main issues of contention in the campaign, and Governor Nakamura’s reelection ensures that the prefectural government will continue to support the concept.

A recent newspaper poll showed a plurality of the prefecture’s residents in favor of hosting an IR, a polling result so far found in no other part of Japan.
