Proposal for an undersea casino in Nagasaki

Hideo Sawada, the founder of H.I.S., one of Japan’s largest travel agencies, who is also president of Huis Ten Bosch, the theme park in Sasebo city has sketched out a grand vision of an undersea casino in Nagasaki.

Sawada’s concept is that the facility to be built at the current site of the Rotterdam Parking Lot would also have a pier leading to “the world’s first” undersea casino, where visitors would play card games and roulette surrounded by hardened glass, looking out upon the fish and other sea life of Omura Bay.

He anticipates that this would require several hundred million US dollars to build.

Sawada believes that such a unique attraction would draw visitors from far and wide, thus making Huis Ten Bosch—redeveloped as an IR including a new outlet mall—a significant success.

It is not clear, however, if Sawada’s concept will be reflected in the IR basic plan to be published by Nagasaki Prefecture by around March. Additionally, the business relationship between the prefecture’s IR initiative and Sawada’s company which operates Huis Ten Bosch remains to be clarified.
