Proposed Phu Quoc casino may relocate to northwest of island

Vietnam’s Ministry of Construction has asked the Prime Minister to approve a new location for the casino proposed on the resort island of Phu Quoc, moving it from northeast to northwest of the island.

The ministry said it would be easier to call for investors to develop the project if it is located adjacent to Vinpearl Resort rather the current site of Da Chong Ward in Bai Thom, The Saigon Times reported.

The proposed new location, which got the green light from the Ministry of Planning and Investment, covers 37 hectares as part of a zone for luxury tourism facilities in the northwest of the country’s biggest island.

The casino on is expected to have 200 to 400 live tables and 2,000 gaming machines. It will also have a conference center and five-star hotels with 3,000 rooms.

Investors should spend a minimum of $4 billion on the project, heard a conference held earlier to discuss a plan for turning Phu Quoc into a special economic zone.
