Public tender process likely in 2021: Professor

Macau gaming law professor Jorge Godhino says the public tender for gaming concessions will likely be held in 2021, Macau News Agency reports.

On Saturday, Macau’s secretary for Economic and Finance, Lionel Leong said that the government is doing preparatory work for a public tender process for gaming concessions, which will happen prior to the 2022 expiry of the current concessions.

“The government has announced that the current concessions will not be extended further. In other words, they will expire in 2022, and therefore we will have a public tender. My guess is that there will be a public tender will take place in 2021,” said the professor in the sidelines of a book launch.

Regarding talks about Suncity being a top contender for a 7th gaming license, Mr. Godhino told MNA it was a “natural step” for the junket group, but said even if it does not obtain the license, the company would still be known as a casino operator due to its activities in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.
