Putin tightens tax controls

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a bill into law that will require casino operators to step up their identification of patrons in a bid to improve tax revenue.

It obliges the company to ensure the provision in the cashier's receipt of the customer’s  surname, first name, the series and number of the client's passport or his taxpayer identification number.

As first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Budget and Taxes Alexander Remezkov explained to state RIA Novosti news agency, this data will allow the tax authorities to fully identify visitors of casinos and slot machine halls in order to calculate the amount of tax on their winnings.

He recalled that since the beginning of 2020, the provisions of the Tax Code have come into force, which redefine the tax base for personal income tax on winnings received in casinos and slot machine halls. The base is defined as the difference between the funds received by the gamblers and the funds they paid for the exchange tokens of the gambling establishment.

It was not immediately clear as to whether the law is intended to be applied to foreign nationals playing in Russia’s casinos.
