QLD to benefit from NSW greyhound racing ban

Queensland’s A$600 million (US$457.3 million) a year greyhound racing industry is said to benefit from NSW’s ban, The Australian reports.

According to the local media outlet, prominent trainers and owners in NSW may move north, where the Palaszczuk government recently reaffirmed the industry’s long-term future.

On Monday, Queensland Racing Minister Grace Grace reportedly met stakeholders to reaffirm the government’s support. “The meeting was to reassure them that the Queensland government believes in the future of the state’s greyhound industry,” said Grace.

“We will not be following the NSW ban on greyhound racing and the industry will continue in Queensland. I believe that the greyhound industry in Queensland is up to the challenge of reform and ensuring that we have the highest standards of animal welfare and integrity in Australia.”

Both Queensland and Victoria have announced they will not ban the sport after Mike Baird's announcement last week. However, the Australian Capital Territory has shown support for Baird’s decision, and has announced it also plans to end the industry in the capital territory - likely under the same deadline of July 2017.
