Queensland authorities investigate sports betting scam

The Crime and Corruption Commission in the Australian state of Queensland is allegedly probing a former senior police detective over claims he defrauded people across Australia, taking millions through sports betting scams, ABC news said, reporting the results of a four-month investigative report by its news team.Investigators are probing Michael Featherstone's links to senior serving and former police officers on the Gold Coast and elsewhere, his possible connections to bikies and his role in cold-calling companies alleged to be involved in fraud, the report said.The syndicates were operating out of anonymous offices staffed with telemarketers promising people they can beat the odds.The companies were also selling sports prediction software for up to $16,000 a time, with buyers assured by the promoters they will never lose. They lured people into betting syndicates where, for thousands of dollars, investors are promised a share in profits from gambling, the investigation found.
